Grants Being Cut

We have learned that in Scotland the Grants will cease on the 25th July 2010. That makes the last castle standing ready to close its doors too.

At this stage the Government still have made no 'official' statement on the RHI. This is making the industry worry about the Green credentials of this new coalition.

The industry in GB needs a statement, or it will go the way the Irish industry has went - into hibernation...or is it extinction!

All Grants Cut

Today the UK Government has cut all grant support to individual homeowners and businesses looking to install Microgeneration Technologies. This is deeply disappointing as this flies in the face of the "Green New Deal" they talked about prior to the elction. Many people thought that with the Torries and Liberals creating a coalition, the merger of the Blue and Yellow would create a shade of Green. This has not been the case with today's budget cuts announced.

One will have to wonder were the Renewable Energy Businesses that have set up over the last 5 or 6 years will go now. The market in northenr Ireland is near dead, the Republic of Ireland is dead and now the GB market, just as it got up from lying down has been knocked flat out again. Will the UK be able to meet its European targets for Renewable Energy? One doubts it as the weed killer that has been sprayed on the Green Shoots has just been sprayed by the Con-Dems!

Fuel poverty - The Real Solution

So what is Fuel Poverty?

Fuel poverty is when a household needs to spend more than 10% of their household income on all domestic fuel use including appliances to heat their home to an adequate level of warmth.

So how do you eradicate it?

Well for most Devolved GOvernments it seems to be stick a Gas boiler or Oil Boiler in!

So what is wrong with that?

Well, it flies in the face of Carbon Reduction Targets across the UK, Europe and the World. It fails to account for price volatility and fails to allow any market room for renewables.

Take Northern ireland for example. Well, it has a policy within DSD to put Gas in where the gas line is and oil elsewhere. Yet in October 2009, the Sutherland tables stated that Wood Pellets was the cheapest fuel. Again in May 2010 it comes out better than oil. SO why have such a restrictive policy? It seesm that the DSD had this policy devised by NIHE in 2006...then it was passed by DSD in 2009. Yes thats 3 years to approve a policy...welcome to the North of Ireland!! In 2006 the oil age was just starting to show signs of the price volatility period. SO I suppose NIHE could be forgiven for having the policy worded as was. However, for DSD then to approve it in 2009, after the prices that was reached in 2008 is alarming! One begs to ask, what is the DSD Committee team at STormont doing and what are the civil servants not doing?

Then a good report by a respected journalist at our public floated tv station here in ulster done a great report (can be seen by going to www.rozellrenewables.com and clicking on the You Tube link). It highlighted the NIHE trials that are 3 years old!! Is there an anti-renewable strategy secretly lurking on a desk within NIHE.

I heard every political party and leader mention Renewables and the Green New Deal and Economy. Lets see who implemnets the changes and allows those in need of cheaper fuel to remove them from Fuel Poverty the choice of fuel sources.

You can remove fuel poverty but not by restricting fuel sources to highly flucuating fuels! Wood Pellets is local....manufactured in Enniskillen!! Maybe our Belfast Urbanites in DSD and NIHE do not know where Enniskillen is? Wonder why that is why one person asked me for the area code!

Go back to the definition - 10% of income to heat their home. So either you have a lower fuel cost fuel source, increase wages or increase the outside temperature. One has to wonder and think hard which is the easiest for NIHE and DSD. Of course its allow Wood Pellet systems into the Policy that cost the same to install as oil!! Maybe we will wait another 3 years for the policy to change.

The consultation for the Renewable HEat Initiative is about to close in GB. This will be a massive boost to the Renewable Heat market in GB.

I call on the candidates in the Westminster Election in Northern Ireland to stand up and be counted and to see that this RHI is extended to NI.

Lets see your manifestos and some substance!

CHP Production of Pellets

Some people ask me why pellets will not track oil. Well the simple answer is that oil has little involvment in the production. In Enniskillen there is the UK and Irelands largest producer (not the ONLY producer) of pellets. The use Combined Heat and Power (CHP) production. On site they roughly use 2 tonne of wood chip to produce 1 tonne of pellets.

They have a large wood chip boiler that creates Steam to drive an engine that creates electricity for the factory production. Therefore their production is also carbon neutral.

Yes pellets will rise, but only in line with inflation. The transport of the pellets will affect prices slightly but not significantly. Wood Pellets are currently the official cheapest fuel in the island of Ireland (Sutherland tables Oct 2009). As more people start to produce in GB it will become the cheapest fuel source there too, and when the Renewable Heat Incentive comes in there it will be the cheapest fuel source.

CHP production of pellets is the best way and cheapest way to produce pellets.

Northern ireland Housing Executive

The NIHE have just installed another 3 Wood Pellet Boilers in lisnaskea, County Fermangh. This is another great leap of faith in the technology and in Irelands cheapest fuel (Sutherland Tables Oct 2009).

With this 3 houses have been removed from the fuel poverty trap by the replacment of their old Economy 7 heating systems. Above is an image of early work on the day. I will update a compeklted image of the 3 units soon which will demonstrate how neat they can be installed into a small back yard.

Wood Pellet Boilers that work

Well, this is the first post. This blog is a place for people that have wood pellet boilers that are functioning proper to post their sucess stories, their fuel savings, and their overall happiness about their systems.

It is also a blog for people to post their comments on their condensing oil or gas systems that have given bother and trouble that is often forgotten about due to the fact that these technolgies have become mainstream and nearly any plumber can fix.

It is also to encourage the Wood Pellet and Biomass industry to become more open and to see it develop like the Scandanavian model where there is an abundance of Pellet and Biomass Fuel deliveries available and that the boilers can have almost any burner attached to them and parts are fairly common throughout the industry.
